Saskatchewan Alliance for Sustainable and Innovative Transportation

As a part of its mandate to build partnerships that help create sustainable communities through innovative infrastructure development, Communities of Tomorrow has developed important linkages in the area of sustainable roads and transportation systems.  Communities of Tomorrow supported the coming together of stakeholders to create the Saskatchewan Alliance for Sustainable and Innovative Transportation (SASIT).

The key stakeholders in SASIT are:

  • City of Regina
  • City of Saskatoon
  • Communities of Tomorrow
  • National Research Council
  • Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association of Saskatchewan
  • Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology
  • Saskatchewan Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation
  • Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure
  • University of Regina
  • University of Saskatchewan

The common goal of SASIT is to pool resources, share expertise, and manage risk to create new innovations in road and highway construction processes and technologies that will decrease costs and extend infrastructure life.

The mandate of SASIT is to build a world-class transportation centre of excellence in Saskatchewan that develops applied solutions for both local needs and the international marketplace.  SASIT will succeed through collaboration between transportation agencies, businesses, and researchers.

SASIT is now engaged in Phase One of its implementation, during which they are building the foundation for success through development of a long term business and financial plan and consultations with stakeholders.  Phase Two, expected to begin sometime in 2009, will include the launch of a coordinated research program, the establishment of a transportation commercialization system, and a strategy to promote the alliance outside Saskatchewan.
